Starting childcare is a big step for the whole family. Here are simple, reassuring ways to help your child settle in.
Starting at a new early learning centre is a big step — for your child and for you. Every child settles at their own pace, and a little preparation goes a long way toward making those first days calm and happy.
Before the first day
A few small things in the weeks beforehand can make a real difference.
- Talk about care in a warm, positive way, so it feels like an adventure
- Visit the centre together if you can, so the space and faces feel familiar
- Practise short separations with family or friends
- Settle into a consistent morning routine at home

A goodbye that works
Long, worried goodbyes tend to make partings harder, not easier. A short, confident goodbye — a hug, a cheerful "see you after lunch", and a reliable exit — tells your child that you trust the educators and that you will be back.
It is completely normal for a child to be upset at drop-off and settle happily minutes later. Our educators are always glad to call or message you during the day if it helps to know how things are going.
Bring something familiar
A comfort item from home — a favourite toy, a family photo, or a special blanket — can be a real anchor in a new place. Familiar smells and textures are reassuring, especially at rest time.

Settling in is a process, not a single day. Most children find their feet within a couple of weeks.
Be kind to yourself, too
Parents feel the wobble as much as children do. Trust your instincts, lean on your child's educators, and give the new routine time to find its rhythm. If you ever have questions, our team is here to help.
This is one of the first example articles published with our refreshed website. The Small Steps team will share more news and family guides here over time.
Have questions for our team?
Our director Samia and our educators are always here to chat about early learning routines, settling in, or fee questions.
